Baksidetext: In the evening of the 2nd September 1879 a Swedish steam barque Vega put into the harbour of Yokohama in Japan. This was an unusal event, not only since contacts between Sweden and Japan were rare in those days, but also because of the route by which the ship had travelled. It arrived from the north by the Bering Strait after a journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific, sailing along the northern coast of Europe and Asia. The expedition was the first ever to have accomplished the navigation of the Northeast Passage - a longstanding dream of many arctic travellers.
     The Vega Expedition was led by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, Professor at the Swedish Museum of Natural History and a renowned expert in travel and survival in the Polar Regions. The expedition remained in Japan for two months while the ship was given a thorough overhaul. During this time Nordenskiöld and his colleagues travelled extensively and visited many places of cultural and scientific interest. Japan was then in a hectic phase of modernisation and in his reports on the visit Nordenskiöld made many interesting comparisons between Japan and Sweden, in terms of their economical development, political organisation and social customs. The seven authors who have contributed to this book focus on various aspects of this remarkable event in the history of the cultural exchange between Sweden and Japan.

Min kommentar: Kort kan man säga att den här boken handlar om Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld och hans besättning på Vegas, stopp i Japan, efter att man lyckats segla genom Nordostpassagen. Man stannar i Japan i två månader, mest för att skeppet behöver fixas till inför seglatsen hem till Sverige igen. I boken får man veta lite mer om själva expeditionen, men även vad A.E. Nordenskiöld gjorde när han var i Japan. Ett kapitel är ägnat åt det bibliotek med japanska böcker som Nordenskiöld tog hem.

Hade boken handlat om själva expeditionen så hade jag nog blivit mer frälst än vad jag blev nu. Men det är ingen dålig bok, nej det är bara det att det handlar inte om något ämne som intresserar mig. Däremot är jag lite mer nyfiken på själva expeditionen, så den har gjort mig nyfiken ändå. Kapitlet om de japanska böckerna skumläste jag bara igenom, så om du frågar mig om vilka böcker han tog med sig hem så har jag tyvärr ingen aning. Men, jag vet i vilken bok jag ska leta, om jag får frågan. =)
